In these hard economic times it can be tough scraping together enough money to buy supplements let alone pay for your usual rent/mortgage, utilities, food,  and fuel.

However if you are like me you just don’t feel the same without a supply of supplements to use after that intense training session at the gym.  The good news is there are some simple things you can do to cut costs while getting your supplement fix.

1.    Get Back To Basics

These days there 1000’s of supplements available to help you build muscle and lose weight.  The good news is that most of them are more hope than hype, by that I mean many of the supplements lack scientific evidence and are more based on hype than anything else.  So what should you do I here you ask…stick to the fundamentals!

Before Nitric Oxide and testosterone boosters there was protein and creatine…simple but effective.  Your supplement plan should be as well.

  • Whey Protein/Protein Blend - A good quality protein powder like Optimum Whey Protein is suitable for everybody regardless of your fitness goals.  If you are trying to lose weight you can use it as is in between meals.  As a weight gainer or post workout shake just add your own carbohydrate and fat.  One of my favorite homemade protein shakes is simply…

- 2 cups milk
- 2 scoops of your favorite  protein powder
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cups of oats (optional)
- 1 TBS of Udo’s Choice Oil

  • Creatine - Hundreds if not thousands of studies over many years have proven the effectiveness of this supplement for building muscle. If putting on muscle is your goal it’s a no brainer. If you are aiming for fat loss you can probably save your pennies.
  • Multi Vitamin - I always advocate a good multi vitamin/antioxidant supplement as part of a balanced diet.  It just acts as a nutritional insurance policy if you are missing some key vitamins and minerals from your diet.  The anti oxidants of course can help with free radical damage.

2.    Make Your Own Supplements

If you just can’t go without some of your favourite supplement stacks and have a bit more money to spend after buying your fundamental supplements then a good idea is to buy individual ingredients and make your own supplements.  One of my favourite resources for this is Jeff Andersons ‘Homemade Supplement Secrets’, it shows you how to save heaps of money making by making supplements from home.

3.    Buy Online

This should seem obvious but it’s not otherwise places like GNC would be going out of business.  By buying only you can literally save 40-70% off the normal retail price of many of your favorite supplements…but you knew that already didn’t you :)  Here are a couple more tips that can save you even more…

  • Buy specials - There are always specials to be had on top of the already discounted prices.  In the search box of your favourite online supplement retailer type in “Buy 1 get 1 free” or “expired” or something similar.  Expired products generally don’t taste any different (except protein bars) but are heavily discounted so get in while they are still in stock.
  • Use Coupons - Most online retailers will have some kind of coupon redemption system it is just a matter of finding what they are each month. Coupons can usually save you an extra $10-$35 for each purchase.

Building muscle or losing weight on a budget doesn’t mean giving up the supplements you love.  If you have got any other supplement buying secrets I’d appreciate you sharing them below.
