People are always talking about the habits that you have to form to get in shape. Well, I think we also need to look at what bad habits we need to break if we want to get fit. After All, just one or two bad habits can ruin your newly established three or four good habits.

Here is a list of the bad habits I think are most important for you to get rid of before you can really get healthy.

Bad Habit #1: Self Defeating Attitudes

If you look in the mirror and you tell yourself how fat you look or you simply don’t look in the mirror at all because you know you’ll be disgusted by your own appearance, you need to lighten up a little.

It’s okay to recognize that you’re out of shape – it’s not okay to beat yourself up over it. So, you let yourself go a little…or a lot. Berating yourself isn’t going to fix anything – action will. So, stop wasting time putting yourself down, and instead, sit down and write out a plan.

Bad Habit #2: I’ll Start on Monday

Hello, if it’s Tuesday afternoon and you decide that you need to get in shape – why in the world would you wait until Monday to start?

Okay, I know why because I use to do the same thing – it just feels right to start a new program at the beginning of the week. However, just because it feels right doesn’t mean that it is right.

So, if you know that you need to get in shape – do it now. No excuses, just jump in with two feet and commit to it today. Just think, by Monday you’ll already be almost a whole week fitter than if you had waited.

Bad Habit #3: Putting Everyone Else in Front of Yourself

As a mom of two I understand this concept all too well. In fact, I feel a little guilty as I’m writing this because I haven’t worked out in a few days because my kids come first and then my husband and then my job…you get the picture.

So, I guess this is one habit that I need to break as well. We all need a little time in our days for our own health. If you’re always last on the list, you tend to neglect proper eating and regular exercise. But, as we all know, our bodies will only take that for so long before they turn on us and we get sick.

I guess I’ll take this little vow with the rest of you. I’m going to start making at least thirty minutes a day for fitness no matter what else is going on. If not, I know that I won’t be able to stay fit and healthy.

Bad Habit #4: Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Whenever I complain to my husband that I’m gaining weight or losing muscle he looks at me and simply states, “so do something about it”. While this is infuriating at the time he says it, it’s actually great advice.

This goes along with making time for yourself. You have to stop making excuses as to why you can’t workout, and make a plan so that you can workout. Fit it in in 10 minute chunks throughout the day if you have to, just start somewhere.

Bad Habit #5: Stop Drinking Your Calories

Okay, this one’s a little less philosophical than the others, but it’s a huge problem for so many people.

To lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. Well, if you’re drinking a few thousand calories worth of beer and soda every week, that’s a whole pound of weight that you’re not going to lose, or even worse, that you’ll gain.

So, stick to diet soda, water and coffee and tea. Avoid high calorie beverages whenever possible. Depending on how bad your soda habit is, you may lose weight by breaking this habit alone.

Take a look at your life. Figure out what you can change to become more health, physically and mentally and then make one change at a time. With some time and persistance you’ll find yourself back in shape in no time at all.

These same magazines are usually full of promises and advertisement of supplements that are supposed to give you that much coveted body. But is it possible for everyone to achieve those kinds of results?

I don’t need to tell you that pictures can lie. With a few brush strokes, the little extra fat on a model’s body can be melted away. Of course, there’s no denying that many have incredible bodies to begin with.

There is, however, a genetic component that allows them to have such coveted physiques. The possess body types that allow them, with proper exercise (and sometimes a little cheating) to achieve that look.

What are the different body types, and how can they affect your goals? Well, for starters, there are three main body types, and every human being is a variation of these three. They include (1) ectomorph,(2) mesomorph, and (3) endomorph.

1. Ectomorph Body Type

An ectomorph is the a person who is usually extremely slim. They have long arms and legs. Typically their shoulder width is narrow, and they have very little fat reserves. These are the people that can eat without generally gaining weight. With this body type, it can be extremely difficult to put on a significant amount of muscle mass, since the body has a limited amount of muscle fibers to begin with.

2. Mesomorph Body Type

Mesomorph is the genetic equivalent of winning the lottery. This body type allows people to gain muscle with very little effort, and their potential for great strength is high. This body type characteristically has broad shoulders, large chest and a long torso.

3. Endomorph Body Type

Since there are always genetic lottery winners, so to are there people who get the genetic short end of the stick. Endomorphs are body types that easily pack on fat. Their musculature is soft, and they have wider hips and a lot of fat storage. These are usually the “big boned” folks who just can’t seem to lose weight very easily.

Conclusion

What’s important to understand is that people can often be a mix of these body types. Not everyone is a perfect ectomorph. There is obviously some leeway here.

With that said, however, you should realize that certain body types offer limitations on the kind of results you’ll achieve. It’s best to workout to be healthy, fit, and in shape, rather than fantasize about the perfect body that may not be in your reach.

By keeping your goals and ambitions within the scope of your body frame and type, you’ll be able to feel better about your results.

Most people who have been exercising for a while typically chose a “side” of working out that they prefer the most. Some subscribe to the idea that the best way to lose weight is to do weight training. Others maintain that cardiovascular exercise is the only way to increase your metabolism, and is therefore the best.

How weird that people have such intense loyalties at the expense of a full workout!

Everyone is limited by time and energy. You can’t devote your entire day to working out, and even if you did, you’d be so tired that you would be completely useless anyways.

So, obviously you need to make sacrifices when deciding how best to divide your workout. If you want to lose weight and be fit, the biggest question you must be asking yourself is: what should I devote most of my time doing?

Why I Prefer Weight Training For Weight Loss

Personally, I’m a big believer in the power of weight training. The reasoning is simple: when you run or jog, the amount of calories you consume is limited to the time you spend running. Weight training, on the other hand, requires continual energy, both during for the actual lifting, and after to repair the torn muscle.

Also, once you gain more mass, the amount of energy you expend just sitting down is increase, since it takes so much more energy just to maintain your new body. In other words, with weight training, you can lose weight even when you’re sleeping.

This isn’t to take anything away from cardio. In some of the other post I put up, I mentioned that muscle fatigue occurs because of the inability for the body to circulate both oxygen into the cells, and lactic acid out. How efficient the body is at doing this has a lot to do with a person’s cardio.

Often, a person working out will not maximize weight lifting due simply to cardiovascular failure. Therefore, maintaining a good degree of cardio health is integral.

I see a lot of people, especially girls, which are distrustful of weight training.

They have it in their minds that if they work out, they will develop huge muscles that will make them look unattractive and manly.

Little do they know that actually getting big requires a huge commitment, and that most individuals simply don’t produce enough testosterone to even come close to the size of competitive bodybuilders. What they are missing out on is the chance to become leaner, fitter, and a lot stronger.

The best way to achieve balance is to develop a routine that focuses primarily on weight training, but not at the expense of cardio.
Personally, I find that a quick, intense jog in the morning is enough to maintain a good cardio level without sacrificing my ability to weight train.

Over time, you might find a system that works for you.

Remember that to maximize your weight training, it’s better if you end with cardio, rather than begin. This will allow you the energy you need to get the most out of your routine.
